The ZOLOTY family of Cleveland, Ohio finds its roots in the
present day village of
Oreske, Slovakia and nearby Stare. They were of Rusyn ethnicity and
attended the Greek Catholic church in the nearby village of Volya (or
Laborcz-Volya), which is present day Vola.
The surname is spelled ZOLOTI in the Latin alphabet church
records, and is transcribed as ZOLOTA from the church records that are written
using the Cyrillic alphabet.
The ZOLOTI family has been traced back as far as Georgius and
Anna ZOLOTY. According to the church records from Volya, Georgius and Anna
gave birth to Josephus in 1809. Josephus (or Josef) is enumerated in the 1869
Hungarian Census in Oreszka. At that time he was married to Mária TKACS. I
have found an earlier marriage of a Josef ZOLOTI to an Anna DEMTSISAK. For the
time being, I am not sure which of these women is my ancestor.
Michael ZOLOTY, the
first known ZOLOTY to immigrate to the United States, arrived in Baltimore on
29 May 1890 aboard the
Dresden. Mihály ZALATI was 20 years old and is listed as traveling from
Austria.
